I’m delighted to report that my article “Global Notation as a Tool for Cross-Cultural and Comparative Music Analysis” has now been published in the online peer-reviewed journal Analytical Approaches to World Music, Volume 8, No. 2 (2020). The article explains the background and rationale for the system and applies it to analyses of music from India, Bali, and the Western classical tradition. It’s accompanied by eight written responses presenting a range of perspectives from experts experienced in world music analysis primarily through staff notation. I’m very grateful to these distinguished scholars for giving global notation their careful attention and critical insights, and I’ll be drawing on their input to continue developing and improving the system.
